Y.V.Fresh Exposed: Cherries
What are Cherries?
Cherries are a small round fruit with a deep red outer skin that matches its sweet, juicy flesh. They are considered to be a stone fruit, as they have a small pip in the middle. They grow on a cherry tree, which fills with beautiful pink and white flowers during the Spring.
Where are Cherries grown?
Y.V.Fresh cherries are predominantly grown in Victoria, with some also grown in farms down in Tasmania.
How are Cherries grown?
Cherries trees are planted in the late fall or early spring. The trees need plenty of space to grow and spread their roots, therefore they need to be planted in deep soil. The trees need plenty of water, sunlight and fertilised soil. Our trees have white blossoms during Spring and when the flowers begin to fall of our sweet cherries begin to grow. A problem that many of our farmers face are birds eating a large portion of our produce. We are forced to throw large nets over our trees to combat this problem.
When are Cherries ready to be eaten?
Our premium cherries are ready to be eaten when their skin turns into a deep red that matches the flesh on the inside. They encase a sweet, ever so slight tangy flavour and are juicy when bitten into.
Why are Cherries good for you?
Cherries, like most of our fruit, contain high amounts of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. These all help in reducing the risk of many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and arthritis. Cyanidin and quercetin, both of which are also found in cherries, help in aiding symptoms of hayfever, eczema and asthma. This means you may eat cherries until your heart's content.
